Which U.S. stock exchange hosted the trading floor where the 1929 Wall Street crash unfolded?
Answer
New York Stock Exchange
Answer
New York Stock Exchange
The New York Stock Exchange hosted the trading floor at the center of the 1929 Wall Street crash.
Located on Wall Street in New York City, the NYSE was then—and remains—the leading marketplace for many large American companies. In October 1929, frantic selling there helped turn a long period of speculation into a historic market collapse.
The crash is usually described through several trading days. Black Thursday came on 24 October, Black Monday on 28 October, and Black Tuesday on 29 October. The Dow Jones Industrial Average reached a temporary low after these events, although the broader bear market continued until 1932.
The crash did not by itself cause every problem of the Great Depression. Banking failures, falling demand, debt, and policy mistakes also mattered. The Nasdaq did not yet exist; it was founded in 1971, so it could not have been the exchange involved in 1929.
