Ohio was home to the Wright brothers’ bicycle and aircraft workshop. Wilbur and Orville Wright lived and worked in Dayton, Ohio, where their bicycle business and early aircraft construction were based.
The brothers’ connection to Ohio is sometimes overshadowed by their famous flight-testing sites in North Carolina and Ohio. Kitty Hawk provided strong winds and open sand for early glider experiments, while Huffman Prairie near Dayton later became an important powered-flight testing field.
Dayton supplied the workshop, tools, bicycle income, and local network that supported the brothers’ technical work. They designed and built major components there before transporting aircraft to their testing locations.
The distinction between birthplace, workshop, and flight site matters. Orville was born in Dayton, and the brothers’ business operated there, but their first powered flights took place in North Carolina. Ohio remained central to their engineering and manufacturing activities.
