Which U.S. state capital was named for Andrew Jackson?
Answer
Jackson
Answer
Jackson
Jackson, Mississippi, was named for Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States.
The settlement was selected as Mississippi’s capital in 1821 because of its central position. It was first known as LeFleur’s Bluff, after French-Canadian trader Louis LeFleur, whose trading post stood near the Pearl River. The new capital received the name Jackson in honor of the popular military leader and future president.
Jackson became a major political and transportation center in central Mississippi. Its history includes important events during the American Civil War and the civil rights movement. The city’s name can be confused with several other places called Jackson, but Mississippi’s capital is the nationally prominent state-government center associated with the Pearl River.
