Which U.S. state capital is the only one located outside continental North America?

The story behind the answer

Honolulu is the only U.S. state capital located outside continental North America.

Honolulu is the capital and largest city of Hawaii, an island state in the central Pacific Ocean. It lies on the southeastern coast of the island of Oahu and is the principal governmental, commercial, and transportation center of the Hawaiian Islands.

The city is often confused with Hawaii itself, but Honolulu is a city-county area within the state. It is also commonly associated with Waikiki, the famous resort district immediately east of downtown Honolulu. The state government operates from the Hawaii State Capitol in downtown Honolulu.

Juneau, Alaska, is also geographically unusual because it is inaccessible by road, but Alaska is part of North America. Honolulu’s island location makes it the sole state capital outside the continent’s mainland geographic setting.
