Which U.S. state became Georgia O'Keeffe's long-term artistic home?
Answer
New Mexico
Answer
New Mexico
New Mexico became Georgia O'Keeffe's long-term artistic home.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1917 and returned frequently before making the state her permanent base. Its high desert, mountains, adobe buildings, churches, and intense light supplied subjects that shaped the later decades of her career.
She lived and worked in Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch, north of Santa Fe. The landscape was not merely scenery for her: she repeatedly painted particular cliffs, doors, hills, and bones, examining how familiar forms changed under different light and viewpoints.
O'Keeffe spent part of her earlier career in New York and Lake George, but New Mexico is most closely associated with her mature work. The state also became central to her public legacy through the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe.
