Which US space mission first landed humans on the Moon in July 1969?

The story behind the answer

Apollo 11 was the US space mission that first landed humans on the Moon in July 1969.

NASA launched Apollo 11 from Kennedy Space Center on 16 July aboard a Saturn V rocket. The crew consisted of commander Neil Armstrong, lunar module pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and command module pilot Michael Collins. After traveling to lunar orbit, Armstrong and Aldrin entered the lunar module Eagle while Collins remained in orbit aboard Columbia.

Eagle landed in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility on 20 July 1969 at 20:17 UTC. Armstrong became the first person to walk on the lunar surface about six hours later, followed by Aldrin. The astronauts spent more than 21 hours on the Moon, collected lunar samples, deployed scientific instruments and photographed the landing site.

Apollo 8 is a common mix-up because it was the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon, but it did not land. Apollo 13 also traveled toward the Moon, yet an onboard explosion forced its crew to return without landing. Apollo 11 safely splashed down on 24 July 1969.
