Which U.S. president was the first born after the Declaration of Independence?

The story behind the answer

Martin Van Buren was the first U.S. president born after the Declaration of Independence, arriving on December 5, 1782.

Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, New York, more than six years after the Declaration was adopted. He was also the first president born as a U.S. citizen under the new national era rather than as a British colonial subject.

Van Buren was the eighth president and served from 1837 to 1841. Before reaching the White House, he served as a New York politician, U.S. senator, secretary of state, vice president, and governor of New York.

His childhood community retained a strong Dutch influence, and Dutch was spoken in his home. Van Buren remains the only U.S. president who spoke English as a second language. He was also the last president born before Britain ratified the Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War.
