Which U.S. president was in office during the 1907 Panic, an early Wall Street financial crash?

The story behind the answer

Theodore Roosevelt was the U.S. president in office during the 1907 Panic, an early Wall Street financial crash.

The panic began after a failed attempt to corner the stock of United Copper Company, followed by runs on trust companies and severe pressure on New York’s financial system. The crisis spread as depositors and institutions sought cash and confidence weakened.

The United States did not yet have a central bank like the modern Federal Reserve. Financier J. P. Morgan organized private support and helped coordinate emergency lending, making his intervention a defining feature of the episode. The federal government also took measures to contain the damage.

The panic helped build support for monetary and banking reform. Congress later created the National Monetary Commission, whose work contributed to the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. Roosevelt is sometimes confused with William Howard Taft, who became president in March 1909, after the panic had ended.
