Which U.S. president signed the law creating Arlington National Cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater?
Answer
William Howard Taft
Answer
William Howard Taft
William Howard Taft signed the law creating Arlington National Cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater.
Congress authorized the Memorial Amphitheater in 1913, and President William Howard Taft signed the legislation that allowed construction. The amphitheater was dedicated on May 15, 1920, and became a major setting for national commemorations at Arlington.
The complex includes the amphitheater, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Memorial Display Room. Its design created a formal public space for ceremonies honoring military dead and veterans.
The amphitheater is sometimes mistaken for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier itself. The Tomb was dedicated in 1921, one year after the amphitheater. Memorial Day ceremonies at Arlington may use both sites, but they are separate architectural and commemorative features.
