Which U.S. president signed the declaration of war against Japan after Pearl Harbor?

The story behind the answer

Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the United States declaration of war against Japan after Pearl Harbor. Congress approved the declaration on December 8, 1941, one day after the attack.

Roosevelt addressed Congress in a speech that described December 7 as “a date which will live in infamy.” The Senate approved the declaration unanimously, while the House of Representatives passed it with one dissenting vote.

The declaration formally brought the United States into World War II against Japan. On December 11, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States, and Congress responded with declarations against both countries.

Roosevelt is sometimes confused with Harry S. Truman, who became president in 1945 and authorized the use of atomic bombs against Japan. Truman was not president when the United States declared war after Pearl Harbor.
