Harry S. Truman announced the planned formal signing of Japan's surrender in August 1945.
On August 14, 1945, Truman addressed the American people after receiving notice that Japan had accepted the Allied surrender terms. He announced that the formal surrender ceremony would take place on September 2 and emphasized that the official V-J Day designation should wait for the signing.
The announcement followed Hirohito's recorded radio address, which was broadcast to Japan on August 15 in Japanese local time. Because of time differences, Truman's announcement was heard on August 14 in the United States, while the emperor's speech was heard on August 15 in Japan.
Truman had become president after Franklin D. Roosevelt died in April 1945. During Truman's presidency, the United States used atomic bombs against Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the war with Japan ended before the planned Allied invasion of the Japanese home islands.
