Which U.S. photographer took the famous Times Square kiss photo on V-J Day?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Eisenstaedt took the famous Times Square kiss photograph on V-J Day.

Eisenstaedt was a German-born American photographer who worked for Life magazine. His image shows a U.S. Navy sailor kissing a woman in a white uniform in New York City’s Times Square as crowds celebrated the end of the war with Japan.

The photograph was published in Life magazine about a week later in a special section devoted to victory celebrations. Eisenstaedt said he photographed the moment rapidly and did not obtain the names of the two people at the time. The image’s composition and the sailor’s dark uniform against the woman’s white clothing helped make it one of the best-known photographs of the twentieth century.

The image is often called “The Kiss.” It is not the only photograph of that moment: Navy photographer Victor Jorgensen made another view, titled “Kissing the War Goodbye,” from a different angle.
