Which U.S. network originally aired Cheers?
Answer
NBC
Answer
NBC
Cheers originally aired on NBC.
The sitcom premiered on September 30, 1982, on the National Broadcasting Company and remained part of the network’s schedule for all eleven seasons. It concluded on May 20, 1993, after 275 episodes. The series was created by Glen Charles, Les Charles, and James Burrows and was produced with Paramount Television.
Cheers is set in a Boston bar where owner and former baseball pitcher Sam Malone serves drinks to a rotating group of friends, regulars, and employees. Its central cast included Diane Chambers, Carla Tortelli, Coach Ernie Pantusso, Norm Peterson, and Cliff Clavin, with later additions such as Frasier Crane, Woody Boyd, and Rebecca Howe.
A common mix-up comes from the show’s long life in syndication, when episodes appeared on many other channels. NBC was the original U.S. network, however. Cheers became a major part of NBC’s Thursday-night programming and helped establish the network’s later “Must See TV” reputation. Its success also produced spin-offs, including Frasier and Wings.
