USS Nevada was the first U.S. Navy battleship to fire its anti-aircraft guns during the Pearl Harbor attack. The ship was moored near the other battleships when the Japanese raid began and quickly went to action stations.
Nevada was struck by bombs and torpedoes while attempting to leave the harbor. Damage and the danger of blocking the channel led commanders to beach the ship at Hospital Point. This prevented the battleship from sinking in the narrow channel and obstructing naval traffic.
After salvage and repairs, Nevada returned to combat. It later supported Allied operations in the Atlantic and Pacific, including the Normandy landings and the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Its wartime career therefore extended well beyond the attack that made it famous.
