Which U.S. Navy battleship served as a target ship and was sunk at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941?

The story behind the answer

USS Utah served as a target ship and was sunk at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Utah had originally been commissioned as a Florida-class battleship in 1911. After being modernized and reclassified, it became a target and training ship rather than a front-line battleship. Its reduced combat role made it useful for naval exercises, but it was still moored at Pearl Harbor when Japan attacked.

Japanese aircraft struck Utah with torpedoes during the opening phase of the attack. The ship capsized and remained partly visible above the water. Many crew members were trapped inside, and 58 people aboard Utah were killed.

A common mix-up is to identify Utah as one of the operational battleships on Battleship Row. It was moored near Ford Island, but its later role and berth distinguished it from the main battleship line. The wreck remains a protected military memorial site.
