Which U.S. coin denomination was assigned the 2026 Semiquincentennial theme “Liberty over Tyranny”?

The story behind the answer

The dime was assigned the 2026 Semiquincentennial theme “Liberty over Tyranny.”

The United States Mint developed special circulating-coin designs for the Semiquincentennial under authority created by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. The program covered six denominations, including five quarter-dollar designs and special anniversary treatments for other circulating coins.

For the dime, design proposals were reviewed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and the Commission of Fine Arts in October 2024. The chosen thematic concept paired Liberty with the idea of resistance to tyranny. Proposed obverse designs included different representations of Liberty, while the reverse concept showed an eagle in flight carrying arrows.

This detail can be confused with the quarter program, whose themes included the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, abolition, suffrage, and civil rights. The dime’s “Liberty over Tyranny” theme belonged to a separate denomination and design discussion.
