The dollar showed the Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon in the 1976 Bicentennial coinage.
The United States Mint temporarily redesigned the reverses of the quarter, half dollar, and dollar for the Bicentennial. All three coins carried the dual date 1776–1976, but each denomination received a different reverse design.
The quarter featured a Colonial drummer, the half dollar depicted Independence Hall, and the dollar combined the Liberty Bell with the Moon. Dennis R. Williams designed the dollar reverse. The image joined a famous symbol of American independence with the lunar achievement associated with the Apollo program.
These were circulating coins rather than a single collector-only issue. They were struck in large quantities in copper-nickel and silver-clad versions, and the original reverse designs returned after the Bicentennial period.
