Which U.S. Coast Guard cutter has served as host vessel for every Operation Sail event?

The story behind the answer

The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Eagle has served as the host vessel for every Operation Sail event.

Eagle is a sailing training ship and the largest tall ship in the United States Coast Guard. Its role in Operation Sail reflects the event’s emphasis on maritime heritage, international cooperation, and training at sea. The cutter hosted all six Op Sail events held through 2012, including the major Bicentennial gathering in 1976.

Operation Sail events culminate in a parade of ships, traditionally staged in New York Harbor on July 4. Eagle’s presence gives the multinational fleet an American host vessel with an active training mission rather than a purely ceremonial ship.

The name can cause confusion because “Eagle” is also used informally for the vessel without its service designation. The official ship name is USCGC Eagle, and it was originally the German training ship Horst Wessel before being transferred to the United States after World War II.
