Pasadena stages the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day after New Year’s Eve.
The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, commonly called the Rose Parade, travels through Pasadena, California, and is famous for floats covered with natural flowers and other plant materials. It is held on January 1 in most years, although the tradition delays the parade to January 2 when January 1 falls on a Sunday.
The first parade took place in 1890, organized by the Valley Hunt Club to promote Pasadena’s mild winter climate. Horse-drawn carriages, decorated vehicles, and floral displays formed the early event. The parade later developed into a major televised spectacle associated with college football’s Rose Bowl Game.
Los Angeles is often offered as an answer because Pasadena is part of the wider Los Angeles metropolitan area, but the parade’s official host city is Pasadena. The Rose Parade is also distinct from the Rose Bowl football game, which is played at a separate venue in Pasadena.
