Los Angeles is the setting of the film Quinceañera, also titled Echo Park, L.A.
The story takes place in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park and follows Magdalena, a teenager preparing for her quinceañera. The location is more than a backdrop: the film connects the celebration to neighborhood relationships, family life, faith, and changing housing conditions.
Quinceañera was written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006 and won both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. Emily Rios starred as Magdalena.
The Los Angeles setting also reflects the broad presence of quinceañera traditions in the United States. Celebrations may be shaped by Mexican, other Latin American, Latino American, Catholic, and secular influences, rather than following one universal script.
