Pasadena held the first Rose Parade on January 1, 1890, when it was known as the Tournament of Roses.
The event began in Pasadena, California, as a promotional celebration organized by the Valley Hunt Club. Members wanted to showcase Southern California's mild winter climate to people living in colder parts of the United States. The inaugural procession featured decorated horse-drawn carriages, bands, and athletic events rather than the enormous motorized floats associated with the modern parade.
The parade's floral identity developed as more elaborate decorations were added. The Tournament of Roses later became an annual New Year's Day institution, usually held on January 1, except when that date falls on a Sunday; in those cases, the parade is traditionally held on January 2.
The Rose Bowl college football game is connected with the same Pasadena organization, but it is a separate event. The parade route and televised coverage have made Pasadena's celebration a major American New Year's tradition.
