Which U.S. city drops a giant peach on New Year's Eve?

The story behind the answer

Atlanta is the U.S. city associated with the Peach Drop on New Year’s Eve.

The event traditionally lowers a giant peach sculpture toward a tower at midnight, reflecting Georgia’s nickname, the “Peach State.” The Peach Drop began on December 31, 1989, and became Atlanta’s signature answer to New Year’s Eve ball drops in other cities.

For most of its history, the celebration was held at Underground Atlanta, the downtown shopping and entertainment district. The event briefly moved to Woodruff Park in 2018 after Underground Atlanta changed ownership, then returned to its traditional location in 2019. The peach itself has been described as roughly eight feet tall and about 800 pounds.

The event has not occurred every year: editions were canceled during the COVID-19 period and for other logistical reasons, and Atlanta has periodically changed its New Year’s Eve format. That scheduling history does not change the canonical trivia answer. Memphis, Charlotte, and Savannah are not the city identified with the Peach Drop.
