Which U.S. battleship at Pearl Harbor was hit by seven torpedoes?

The story behind the answer

USS West Virginia was hit by seven torpedoes during the Pearl Harbor attack.

The battleship was moored at Ford Island’s Battleship Row when Japanese aircraft attacked on December 7, 1941. Torpedo planes struck its port side, and later bomb hits added further damage. The torpedo impacts caused severe flooding, but counterflooding efforts helped keep the ship upright instead of allowing it to capsize like USS Oklahoma.

West Virginia sank in the harbor but remained salvageable. Crews pumped out the ship, patched the hull, and refloated it in 1942. It was then rebuilt at Puget Sound Navy Yard and returned to the Pacific fleet in time for major late-war operations.

The figure of seven torpedoes identifies West Virginia’s unusually heavy torpedo damage. Other battleships were hit by different combinations of bombs and torpedoes, so damage totals should not be transferred from one ship to another.
