JPMorgan Chase was created in 2000 through the merger of J.P. Morgan and Chase Manhattan.
The merger brought together two historic American financial institutions and created one of the largest banking companies in the United States. The combined company initially used the name J.P. Morgan Chase, later becoming JPMorgan Chase & Co.
Its history also includes major predecessor institutions such as Chemical Bank, Manufacturers Hanover, Bank One, and Washington Mutual’s banking operations. The company acquired Bank One in 2004, bringing Jamie Dimon into the organization as president and chief operating officer before he became chief executive.
JPMorgan Chase is often confused with JPMorgan, which is the brand used especially for investment banking and institutional services. Chase is the consumer and commercial banking brand. The corporation’s shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under JPM.
