Which university, founded in 1088, is considered the oldest in continuous operation?

The story behind the answer

The University of Bologna, founded conventionally in 1088, is considered the oldest university in continuous operation. Located in Bologna, Italy, it grew from communities of students and teachers studying law and other subjects.

Its early organization differed from a modern university. Students formed associations, or universitates scholarium, partly to protect foreign scholars from local laws that imposed collective punishment on outsiders. By the late 12th century, these student guilds had helped create a more recognizable university structure.

The 1088 date is traditional rather than certain. The institution developed gradually, and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I granted it the Authentica habita charter in 1158. Some historians argue that Bologna did not fully resemble a university until later. Even so, the University of Bologna’s long, uninterrupted institutional history gives it the conventional title. It is also associated with major legal scholarship and later figures such as Copernicus and Laura Bassi.
