Which university did J.K. Rowling attend, where she studied French and Classics?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling attended the University of Exeter, where she studied French and Classics.

She entered Exeter in 1983 and completed her degree in 1987. Her course included French, and she spent part of her studies in Paris as an assistant teacher. Her knowledge of classical languages and mythology later became part of the background often discussed in relation to names and ideas in the Harry Potter books.

Rowling did not study at the University of Edinburgh as an undergraduate, although Edinburgh became an important city in her life and career. She moved there in the early 1990s and wrote parts of the Harry Potter series there.

The university connection is also distinct from her later honorary degrees. Exeter awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2000, years after she had completed her original degree.
