Which university did J.K. Rowling attend as an undergraduate?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling attended the University of Exeter as an undergraduate.

She studied French and Classics at Exeter and graduated in 1987. Her course included a year in Paris, reflecting the modern-language part of her degree. After university, she worked in several jobs and later developed the idea for Harry Potter, which she began writing before the first book was published.

The university is sometimes confused with the University of Edinburgh, where Rowling later lived and wrote parts of the Harry Potter series. Edinburgh became strongly associated with her writing career, but it was not her undergraduate university. Her education at Exeter also helps explain why French and classical languages appear in her biography and in some of the invented terminology associated with the books.
