Answer
University College, Oxford
Answer
University College, Oxford
C.S. Lewis attended University College, Oxford, as an undergraduate after serving in World War I.
Lewis entered University College, Oxford, in 1919, following his military service and recovery from wounds received during the First World War. He studied a demanding range of subjects, including Greek and Latin literature, philosophy, and English. His academic performance was exceptionally strong, and he completed several Oxford examinations with distinction.
University College should not be confused with Magdalen College, where Lewis later held a fellowship and taught English literature for many years. He became a fellow and tutor at Magdalen in 1925, so both colleges are closely associated with his Oxford career.
Lewis’s Oxford education provided the classical and medieval literary background visible throughout his fiction and apologetics. He later moved to Cambridge in 1954 to become the first holder of the chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Magdalene College.
