Which university awarded James Watson his PhD?

The story behind the answer

Indiana University Bloomington awarded James Watson his PhD. He completed his doctoral work there in 1950 under geneticist Hermann J. Muller, whose research on mutation and heredity strongly influenced Watson’s scientific direction.

Watson had studied zoology at the University of Chicago and became fascinated by the problem of the gene. At Indiana, he joined a genetics environment shaped by Muller, a 1946 Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine. Watson’s doctoral research focused on bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria, and helped prepare him for molecular biology.

After earning his PhD, Watson pursued research in Europe and later joined the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge. There he met Francis Crick in 1951. Their collaboration led to the 1953 model of DNA’s double-helix structure, built from chemical reasoning and experimental evidence from X-ray diffraction studies.

A frequent confusion comes from Watson’s later institutional affiliations. He became a professor at Harvard University and later directed Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, but neither institution awarded his doctorate. Indiana University Bloomington is therefore the specific university answer, not the University of Chicago where he earned his undergraduate degree.
