Which Union general ordered Farnsworth's cavalry charge near Big Round Top?

Judson Kilpatrick ordered Farnsworth’s cavalry charge near Big Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Kilpatrick commanded the Union cavalry division operating southwest of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. After the Confederate defeat of Pickett’s Charge, he directed attacks against Confederate infantry positions near the Emmitsburg Road and Big Round Top. The attacks were intended to pressure the Confederate flank but confronted troops protected by fences, rough ground, artillery, and prepared defensive positions.

Brigadier General Elon J. Farnsworth recognized the danger of a mounted assault and reportedly protested. Nevertheless, he obeyed the order and led his brigade into the attack. Farnsworth was killed during the final charge, making the episode a lasting example of poor cavalry tactics at Gettysburg.

George Armstrong Custer fought at East Cavalry Field under David McM. Gregg, not in command of Farnsworth’s charge. Gregg commanded the Union cavalry facing J.E.B. Stuart east of town, while Alfred Pleasonton was the overall Union Cavalry Corps commander. Those overlapping command roles are the main source of confusion.
