Which UNESCO World Heritage Site is the only surviving wonder of the ancient world?
Answer
Memphis and its Necropolis
Answer
Memphis and its Necropolis
The UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the only surviving wonder of the ancient world is Memphis and its Necropolis.
The property includes the Great Pyramids of Giza, including the Great Pyramid built for Pharaoh Khufu. The Great Pyramid is the sole surviving monument traditionally listed among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was constructed during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, around the 26th century BCE.
The wider UNESCO property extends beyond the three famous pyramids. It includes the necropolises and monuments of Memphis, Egypt’s ancient capital, as well as sites at Giza, Dahshur, Saqqara, and Abu Sir. Together they show the development of royal funerary architecture over many centuries.
UNESCO inscribed the property in 1979 under the name Memphis and its Necropolis—the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur. The Great Sphinx is also part of the Giza complex. The ancient-wonder designation belongs specifically to the Great Pyramid of Giza, not to every pyramid in the UNESCO property.
