Which UNESCO World Heritage Site is the historic center of the Inca capital Cusco?
Answer
City of Cuzco
Answer
City of Cuzco
The historic center of the Inca capital Cusco is the UNESCO World Heritage Site called City of Cuzco.
Cusco, also spelled Cuzco, was the political and religious center of the Inca Empire. Its historic fabric preserves both Inca and Spanish colonial layers. Spanish buildings were often erected over surviving Inca foundations, creating a distinctive architectural mixture rather than a purely pre-Columbian or purely colonial city.
The city was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. Important features include finely fitted stonework, the former Inca religious precinct of Qorikancha, colonial churches, and the central Plaza de Armas. Inca masonry is especially noted for carefully shaped stones fitted without conventional mortar.
The site is different from the nearby Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, which is a separate UNESCO property. Cusco also served as a major gateway for routes through the Andes, including the wider network associated with the Inca road system.
