Which UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the Rietveld Schröder House?
Answer
Rietveld Schröderhuis
Answer
Rietveld Schröderhuis
The Rietveld Schröder House is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Utrecht, Netherlands, and a landmark of the De Stijl movement.
Gerrit Rietveld designed the house in 1924 for Truus Schröder-Schräder, who collaborated closely with him on its concept. Its crisp planes, primary colours, flexible walls, and strong horizontal and vertical lines express the principles associated with De Stijl, an influential Dutch art and design movement.
The upper floor is particularly innovative because it can be divided or opened into different spaces using sliding and rotating panels. This flexibility allowed the house to function as a changing living environment rather than a collection of permanently fixed rooms.
The building remained associated with Schröder-Schräder until her death in 1985. UNESCO inscribed it in 2000, describing it as an outstanding realisation of the ideals of modern architecture and the De Stijl movement. It is often confused with Bauhaus buildings, but it is specifically linked to Dutch De Stijl design.
