Which UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, designed by architect Le Corbusier?

The story behind the answer

The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier is the UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, India.

The serial property consists of 17 works in seven countries: Argentina, Belgium, France, Germany, India, Japan, and Switzerland. Together they demonstrate Le Corbusier’s attempts to apply modern architecture and urban planning to housing, civic government, religious buildings, and cultural institutions. Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex is one of the most ambitious examples, containing major government buildings and monumental works of architecture.

The property is broader than any single building or city. Other components include the Unité d’habitation in Marseille, the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, and the Swiss Pavilion in Paris. Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex was designed for the new capital of the Indian state of Punjab and later became associated with Chandigarh’s planned modernist cityscape. UNESCO inscribed the serial property in 2016, after an earlier proposal had been expanded to represent Le Corbusier’s international influence more fully.
