Which UNESCO World Heritage Site in Zimbabwe contains the Great Enclosure and massive stone ruins?
Answer
Great Zimbabwe National Monument
Answer
Great Zimbabwe National Monument
Great Zimbabwe National Monument is the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Zimbabwe that contains the Great Enclosure and massive stone ruins.
Great Zimbabwe was built between about the 11th and 15th centuries by ancestors of the Shona people. The settlement became the capital of a powerful trading state linked to gold routes between the African interior and the Indian Ocean coast.
Its dry-stone architecture is notable because the walls were constructed without mortar. The Great Enclosure is the largest single ancient structure south of the Sahara, while the Hill Complex and the Valley Ruins form the other main parts of the site.
A common mistake is to describe Great Zimbabwe as merely a ruined city. Archaeological evidence shows it was a major political, religious, and commercial center. UNESCO inscribed it in 1986.
