Which UNESCO World Heritage Site in the United Kingdom is the Neolithic village of Skara Brae located in?

The story behind the answer

Heart of Neolithic Orkney is the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the United Kingdom that includes the Neolithic village of Skara Brae.

The property lies on the Orkney Islands off the northern coast of mainland Scotland. It includes four principal monuments: Skara Brae, the Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodgar, and the Maeshowe chambered tomb. Together they show the ceremonial and domestic life of Neolithic communities in northern Europe.

Skara Brae is an exceptionally preserved stone-built settlement. Its houses, passages, and stone furnishings survived because they were covered by windblown sand for centuries. Maeshowe is a large chambered tomb with carefully built passages, while the stone circles reveal the importance of communal ceremonial spaces.

UNESCO inscribed the Heart of Neolithic Orkney in 1999. It is separate from the World Heritage property containing Stonehenge and Avebury in southern England. The Orkney monuments are especially valuable because domestic settlement evidence and ceremonial monuments survive together in one cultural landscape.
