Which UNESCO World Heritage Site in the United Kingdom contains the Roman frontier fort of Vindolanda?
Answer
Frontiers of the Roman Empire
Answer
Frontiers of the Roman Empire
Frontiers of the Roman Empire is the UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the Roman frontier fort of Vindolanda.
Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort near Hadrian’s Wall in northern England. The fort and settlement were occupied and rebuilt repeatedly from about AD 85 until the early fifth century. Excavations have found buildings, roads, military equipment, leather footwear, wooden objects, and writing tablets.
The Vindolanda tablets are especially important. Written mainly in Latin, they include military correspondence, supply records, invitations, and personal messages, providing unusually direct evidence about everyday life on the frontier. The fort itself was not the wall, but one component of the frontier system.
The UNESCO property is transnational and represents Roman defensive boundaries in several countries. Its United Kingdom components include Hadrian’s Wall, while related inscriptions elsewhere cover other Roman frontiers. Vindolanda was added to the World Heritage property in 2021 as part of the expanded Frontiers of the Roman Empire.
