Which UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tanzania contains Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro?
Answer
Kilimanjaro National Park
Answer
Kilimanjaro National Park
Kilimanjaro National Park is the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tanzania that contains Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro.
Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres above sea level, making its Uhuru Peak the highest point in Africa. The mountain is a volcanic massif consisting of three cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.
Kibo is the central and highest cone, and its summit area includes glaciers and ice fields that have changed substantially over time. The mountain’s ecological zones range from cultivated foothills through rainforest and heath to alpine desert and summit terrain.
Kilimanjaro became a national park in 1973 and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987. A frequent mix-up is to call Kilimanjaro a single volcano; it is better described as a volcanic massif with three cones.
