Answer
Memphis and its Necropolis
Answer
Memphis and its Necropolis
Memphis and its Necropolis is the UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Sphinx.
The property covers a long chain of pyramid fields associated with Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt. It stretches from Giza in the north to Dahshur in the south and includes major monuments from Egypt’s Old Kingdom, when royal pyramid building reached its greatest scale.
The Great Pyramid was built for Pharaoh Khufu at Giza around the 26th century BCE. Nearby are the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, along with the Great Sphinx, a monumental limestone figure with a lion’s body and a royal human head.
The Great Pyramid is the only surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The UNESCO title is broader than “the Pyramids of Giza”: it covers several necropolises and sites connected to Memphis. The property was inscribed in 1979.
