Which UNESCO World Heritage Site in Cambodia is centered on the temple complex of Angkor Wat?

The story behind the answer

The UNESCO World Heritage Site in Cambodia centered on Angkor Wat is Angkor.

Angkor was the capital region of the Khmer Empire from roughly the ninth to the fifteenth centuries. Its archaeological area contains temples, reservoirs, roads, terraces, and urban remains spread across the northern part of Cambodia’s Tonlé Sap basin. Angkor Wat is the best-known monument, but the site also includes Bayon, Ta Prohm, and many other temples.

Angkor Wat was originally built in the early twelfth century under King Suryavarman II and was dedicated to Vishnu. A common mix-up is treating Angkor Wat and Angkor as identical names: Angkor Wat is one temple within the much larger UNESCO-listed archaeological site. The World Heritage designation was inscribed in 1992, and UNESCO later supported conservation work across the monument zone.
