Which UNESCO World Heritage Site in Austria preserves the historic imperial center of the Habsburg monarchy?

The story behind the answer

Austria’s Historic Centre of Vienna preserves the historic imperial center of the Habsburg monarchy.

The property traces Vienna’s development from a Roman settlement and medieval town into the capital of a major European empire. Its urban fabric contains Gothic, Baroque, and nineteenth-century buildings, reflecting successive periods of political power, religious life, music, and culture.

Major landmarks include St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg palace complex, the Baroque church of St. Charles, and the Ringstrasse ensemble. The historic center also preserves public spaces and architectural relationships that show how the city changed as imperial institutions expanded.

The site should not be confused with Schönbrunn Palace, which is a separate UNESCO World Heritage property in Vienna. The Historic Centre of Vienna was inscribed in 2001. It was placed on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger in 2017 because of concerns about planned high-rise development.
