Which UNESCO World Heritage Site contains the ancient city of Petra?

The story behind the answer

The UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the ancient city of Petra is Petra.

Petra, in southern Jordan, was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom and is famous for monumental buildings carved directly into rose-colored sandstone cliffs. Its best-known façade is Al-Khazneh, often called the Treasury, although the structure was probably a royal tomb rather than a storehouse of treasure.

The city prospered because the Nabataeans controlled important caravan routes linking Arabia, the Levant, and the Mediterranean world. They also developed sophisticated systems for collecting, storing, and distributing scarce water in a dry environment.

Petra was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. Visitors often associate the entire site only with the Treasury, but the archaeological area also includes the Siq, the Monastery, royal tombs, temples, colonnaded streets, and remains of Byzantine buildings. Petra should also not be confused with Hegra, another Nabataean rock-cut site in Saudi Arabia.
