The Channel Tunnel carries Eurostar trains between Britain and continental Europe.
The tunnel runs beneath the English Channel between Folkestone in Kent and Coquelles near Calais. It opened in 1994 and consists of two rail tunnels plus a smaller service tunnel. The service tunnel supports maintenance, access, and emergency operations.
Eurostar trains use the tunnel for international passenger services linking London with destinations including Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. The tunnel also carries vehicle-carrying shuttle trains operated by Eurotunnel.
The Channel Tunnel is often called the Chunnel, but Channel Tunnel is the standard name. It is not the world’s longest rail tunnel by total length, although its undersea section made it a major engineering achievement when it opened.
