Uoya Eikichi issued Hiroshige’s series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
The series was designed by Utagawa Hiroshige and published in installments from 1856 to 1859. Uoya Eikichi, also known as Shozaburo, was the publisher responsible for bringing the project to market and coordinating its production.
One Hundred Famous Views of Edo contains more than one hundred landscape designs despite its title, because additional prints were added to the planned sequence. Hiroshige used unusual viewpoints, seasonal effects, and cropped foreground objects to make familiar sites visually dramatic.
Uoya Eikichi is sometimes confused with Nishimuraya Yohachi, the publisher associated with Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Tsutaya Jūsaburō was another major Edo publisher, particularly important for artists such as Utamaro and Sharaku.
