Which ukiyo-e artist created the warrior print Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre?

Utagawa Kuniyoshi created the ukiyo-e warrior print Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre.

Kuniyoshi was a leading nineteenth-century Japanese print designer, especially celebrated for dynamic images of warriors, legendary heroes, ghosts, and supernatural creatures. Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre shows the historical figure Mito Mitsukuni confronting a gigantic skeleton summoned by the witch Takiyasha.

The design draws on the medieval Japanese tale of the warrior Ōya Tarō Mitsukuni and the rebel princess Takiyasha. Kuniyoshi transformed the story into a striking composition with a huge skeleton dominating the picture, a visual effect that helped make his supernatural prints especially memorable.

Kuniyoshi belonged to the Utagawa school, but he should not be confused with Utagawa Kunisada, who was chiefly known for actor and beautiful-women prints. He also differs from Hokusai, whose supernatural subjects are famous but whose best-known warrior-skeleton image is a separate work. The print is often discussed alongside Kuniyoshi’s broader series of warrior and ghost imagery.
