Which ukiyo-e artist created the series Thirty-six Ghosts?
Answer
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Answer
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi created the ukiyo-e ghost-print series Thirty-six Ghosts.
The series, generally known in English as New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts, was produced during Yoshitoshi’s mature period in the late nineteenth century. Its images draw on ghost stories, legends, historical literature, and supernatural episodes, presenting apparitions and haunted figures with unusually strong psychological tension.
Yoshitoshi was one of the last major masters of the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock-print tradition. His work often combines older subjects with more individualized expressions, unsettling motion, and carefully controlled empty space. The series should not be confused with Hokusai’s One Hundred Ghost Stories, a separate group of supernatural designs, or with Kuniyoshi’s many warrior and monster prints.
