Utagawa Kunisada created the ukiyo-e print Yoshiwara Pleasure Quarter at Night.

Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was one of the most commercially successful ukiyo-e artists of the nineteenth century. He was particularly prolific in actor portraits and bijin-ga, but his work also depicted the licensed pleasure districts that were central subjects of ukiyo-e.

The Yoshiwara was Edo’s officially licensed pleasure district. Night scenes could show lanterns, architecture, courtesans, visitors, and the carefully staged movement of people through its streets. Such images were not straightforward documentary photographs; they combined entertainment, fashion, celebrity culture, and imagined atmosphere.

Kunisada is sometimes confused with Hiroshige because both belonged to the Utagawa tradition and worked in the same broad period. Hiroshige is chiefly associated with landscapes, while Kunisada’s strongest reputation rests on actor and fashionable-person prints.
