Katsushika Hokusai created the ukiyo-e print Fine Wind, Clear Morning, showing Mount Fuji.

The print is also known as South Wind, Clear Sky and belongs to Hokusai’s series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. It shows the mountain rising above a dark reddish or blue-toned landscape, with a clear sky and a broad band of cloud near the summit. The image is one of Hokusai’s most recognizable treatments of Fuji.

The series was published in the early 1830s and eventually included additional designs beyond the number promised by its title. Hokusai varied scale, season, weather, and viewpoint across the series, making Mount Fuji both a sacred national landmark and a compositional anchor.

Fine Wind, Clear Morning is often confused with The Great Wave off Kanagawa because both belong to the same series. The wave print is another view of Fuji, but its central subject is a turbulent sea and boats rather than the mountain’s red morning appearance.
