Which ukiyo-e artist created the famous print Beauty Looking Back?

The story behind the answer

Hishikawa Moronobu created the famous ukiyo-e print Beauty Looking Back.

The print, also known as Mikaeri Bijin, shows a fashionable woman looking back over her shoulder. It is generally dated to the late 17th century, when Moronobu helped establish ukiyo-e as a major printed and illustrated art form.

Moronobu worked in Edo and is often associated with early ukiyo-e developments. His designs emphasized elegant figures, strong outlines, and scenes from contemporary urban life. Beauty Looking Back is especially valued for its graceful pose and detailed kimono.

A common mix-up is assigning the print to Kitagawa Utamaro, who became famous later for portraits of beautiful women. Moronobu belongs to an earlier generation and is closely linked with the formative period of ukiyo-e.
