Which two siblings became leading members of the White Rose resistance group in Nazi Germany?
Answer
Hans and Sophie Scholl
Answer
Hans and Sophie Scholl
Hans and Sophie Scholl became leading members of the White Rose resistance group in Nazi Germany.
The White Rose was a nonviolent student and intellectual resistance movement centered mainly at the University of Munich. Its members wrote and distributed leaflets condemning Nazi dictatorship, the persecution of Jews, and the mass murder being carried out in German-occupied Europe. Hans Scholl, a medical student, and his younger sister Sophie joined the group’s leaflet campaign.
On 18 February 1943, Sophie scattered copies of the group’s sixth leaflet in the university atrium. A university custodian saw her, and the siblings were arrested with Christoph Probst. The People’s Court, presided over by Roland Freisler, sentenced all three to death; they were executed by guillotine on 22 February 1943.
The White Rose was not an armed uprising. Its importance came from openly challenging Nazi propaganda and urging German citizens to resist, despite the extreme danger.
